Few days ago some users reported that a single Telugu character was crashing their iPhones, Mac and Apple Watches.
The bug not only blocked access to iMessage and some other third-party apps on the iPhone, but also affected Safari and Messages on macOS and the Apple Watch. Apple had confirmed that the bug was causing its devices to crash when a Telugu character was sent to the device or typed in text editor and said that it would release updates for its products soon to address it. Apart from fixing the bug, the new iOS update also fixes an issue that caused some third-party apps to fail to connect to external accessories.
The bug causes serious headache when a Unicode character from the Telugu language is sent to a user's phone . The bug then wreaks havoc by sending your Apple device into a deep dark pit of unresponsiveness, apps crashes, and in some cases may even initiate a bootloop as soon as this Telugu character appears on the screen.
The Telugu text bomb, however, is not the only rogue character that can bring your Apple device to its knees. As per software engineers at Aloha Browser there is another Unicode symbol in a non-English language that can crash any Apple device that uses Apple’s default San Francisco font.
How is Works ?
When the Telugu character is sent in an iMessage, it can freeze up the entire Messages app on all of a person’s Mac and iOS devices. The Messages app will then refuse to function properly until the offending character is removed by deleting the conversation with the person who sent it.In some situations, if the character is viewed through an iOS notification, it can cause the entire device to crash.
Apple previously released an update to fix a bug that could freeze your iPhone via a single link. Before that, Apple issued a significant update (iOS 11.2) just a few hours after reports of a bug that caused iPhones to crash.
